Be Prepared - Cyclone Alfred
Hello friends,
As we prepare for the potential impact of Cyclone Alfred, I want to assure you that I am here to support and communicate with you through this significant weather event.
The latest forecasts indicate that Cyclone Alfred could move towards Southeast Queensland from Tuesday, with possible landfall later in the week. Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential flooding are expected, so now is the time to take action to protect your home and loved ones.
๐ Cyclone Stages
Stage 1: Cyclone โ Wind Stage:
In this stage, the cyclone's strong winds will begin to affect our region. These winds can cause damage to structures, trees, and power lines. Stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel during this time.
Stage 2: Heavy Rain and Potential Flooding (River and Land):
This stage is particularly dangerous, as heavy rain can cause flooding in both river systems and low-lying areas. If you live in a flood-prone area, please monitor your surroundings and be prepared to evacuate if necessary. You can never to be too prepared.
Stage 3: Recovery Stage:
Once the cyclone passes, we enter the recovery phase. This stage will focus on assessing damage, clearing debris, and restoring services. Your patience and cooperation during this time will be greatly appreciated as we work together to rebuild.
Our Walter Taylor Volunteer Army are ready to assist where needed when in recovery mode. But we need more on hand, visit my website to sign up: www.pennywolff.com
๐น What weโre doing:
Coordinating with local authorities to keep roads clear and accessible.
Preparing further communications to keep the community informed.
Working as a team, including the former Councillor for Walter Taylor, James Mackay to implement response measures based on previous weather disasters.
Gathering community support through local groups and churches.
๐น How you can prepare:

FREE Green Waste Disposal: Green waste disposal fees have been waived at all four Resource Recovery Centres to assist with preparations.
Secure loose items: especially if youโre in an apartment. Bring in anything that could become dangerous in strong winds, like outdoor furniture, toys, or bins.
Check your home: clear gutters, trim overhanging branches and seal windows and doors properly.
Get ready for power outages: have torches, batteries, and chargers handy. Itโs also a good idea to fill buckets and your bathtub with clean water in case of supply issues.
Stay connected: Ensure your phone is charged and keep a backup charger or charged power bank nearby for power loss.

Prepare your emergency kit: Think of what items your family might use if you had to stay at home for three days. Here is what you can need in your emergency kit.
If you have experienced flooding in recent years, now is the time to take extra precautions. We urge you to prepare your homes and ensure your emergency kits are stocked with essentials.
If you have an underground carpark or you are parked on a street where it has known to previous flood, please find alternative parking on higher ground to prevent any damage to your vehicle in the event of flooding.
If you live in a building with lift access please be mindful that lifts will stop working in a flood event and access to leave your residence will then be limited. Please prepare in advance.
๐ Important Parking Information:
For those of you impacted by the recent flooding or looking for safe parking options, we are grateful to announce that Toowong Village and Indooroopilly Shopping Centre are offering free access to their undercover carparks. If you need to move your vehicle to safety, please take advantage of these locations. It is a crucial step in protecting your property and ensuring everyoneโs safety during Cyclone Alfred.
We are deeply thankful for the generosity of these centres in assisting our community during this challenging time. Their support, along with our collective resilience, will help us all get through this together.
๐ Public transport disruptions: all ferries, buses and trains will be suspended. Please check the latest updates to get yourself home safely.
๐ฎ Bin collections will pause from Thursday: please bring your bins in and secure them to stop them from becoming dangerous in strong winds.

As the heavy rain falls over the next few days, the level of the Brisbane River will be closely monitored. There is a river height gauge located on The Esplanade in St Lucia, near the University.
